Rangers supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side’s faint Scottish Premiership title hopes all but come to an end courtesy of a 3-2 defeat to Celtic on Sunday.
Graeme Murty’s men went into the Old Firm derby having won each of their previous four league games, a run which moved them to within six points of the Bhoys ahead of Sunday’s encounter. And while first half goals from Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias, either side of a Tom Rogic strike, gave the Light Blues a slender advantage at Ibrox, Brendan Rodgers’ champions hit back through Moussa Dembele on the stroke of half time, before Odsonne Edouard bagged the winner midway through the second half to secure all three points for the Bhoys.
As such, there have been many disappointed Rangers fans in the Tavern in the last few days, and they are likely to be interested by a recent report from The Scottish Sun, which suggests that striker Kenny Miller is likely to leave the club this summer at the expiration of his current contract.
The 38-year-old moved back to the Scottish giants in 2014 for his third spell at the club after stints between 2000 and 2001 as well as 2008 and 2011, and he has again proven to be prolific in front of goal with 50 goals in 153 appearances for the Gers in the last three-and-a-half years.
However, the former Scotland international has struggled with injury this season and has featured just once for Murty’s side in the Scottish Premiership in 2018, and reports suggest that his time at Rangers could be coming to an end as he is reportedly ‘unlikely’ to be given a new deal.
And while this news is unlikely to come as much of a surprise to our resident Gers fans, there’s little doubting that their club will miss Miller’s influence, both on and off the pitch.
Landlord’s verdict: Kenny Miller has enjoyed a decent third spell at Rangers after making the move back to Ibrox in 2014, in which time he has helped the club get out of the Scottish Championship and back nearer the upper echelons of the Scottish Premiership.
However, it appears that the £315,000-rated striker (as per Transfermarkt) could be set for a departure this summer, as reports suggest that it is ‘unlikely’ that he will be given a new contract by the Gers hierarchy.
This news isn’t too much of a surprise, given his injury troubles this term and his age of 38, and with Graeme Murty’s side seemingly on the way up, it appears to be in the best interests of all parties involved.
