Rangers supporters have been somewhat disappointed in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side fail to usurp Aberdeen in the race for second place in the Scottish Premiership last weekend.
The Light Blues went into their final day clash at Hibernian needing to better the Dons’ result away at champions Celtic, yet the Gers could only muster a quite sensational 5-5 draw from their visit to the Edinburgh-based outfit. As it happens, even a win wouldn’t have been enough to clinch second place following Aberdeen’s 1-0 success at Parkhead, thus leaving Rangers having to settle for third place in the table at the conclusion of the campaign.
Subsequently, several of our resident Gers fans have been pretty downbeat in the Tavern recently, yet many are already turning their attentions towards the summer and the new era under Steven Gerrard, who will take over as manager ahead of the 2018/19 season.
And one man he is reportedly seeking to lure to Ibrox this summer is Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe, in a deal which, were it to come together, would seriously enhance Rangers’ title credentials next time round.
Ultimately, when it comes to predatory instincts in the 18-yard box, there aren’t many better in the country than the £3.15 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), who has continued to prove his worth in the last few years despite arguably reaching the twilight of his career.
The 35-year-old bagged an impressive 18 goals in just 34 appearances for Sunderland back in the 2015/16 season as they staved off relegation under Sam Allardyce, and while they were unable to do so last season, Defoe wasn’t to blame given he netted 15 times for the Black Cats.
In fact, prior to the 2017/18 season, the England international had reached ten goals in all but one of his last six campaigns in the Premier League, and while injuries have taken their toll this term at Bournemouth, one mustn’t forget his efforts in the years immediately preceding this season.
And having continued to score goals at Premier League level, and at a healthy rate as well, he could be a huge asset for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership next term.
Yes, their tally of 76 goals scored in their 38 league games was more than any other side in the top-flight this season, but only two players in Alfredo Morelos and Josh Windass reached double figures this term – significantly, Celtic saw four players bag at least ten times.
And for the Gers to start challenging the Bhoys for the league title in the coming years, they simply cannot continue to rely on a handful of players to get the goals – more options and reinforcements are needed to help the likes of Morelos and Windass.
And with that duo having been linked with a move away in recent times, it’s plausible that Gerrard could be without two of his most influential stars come the start of next season, which makes a move for Defoe even more integral.
Ultimately, even at the age of 35, Defoe guarantees goals, and if Rangers are serious about challenging Celtic next time round, he the calibre of player that simply have to bring in to give Brendan Rodgers’ side something to think about.
