Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the 2018/19 Scottish Premiership season following the appointment of Steven Gerrard as the club’s new manager last month.
The 38-year-old was confirmed as Graeme Murty’s successor to begin work on June 1, yet he was busy prior to his start date making shrewd additions to his squad in the hope that they can challenge champions Celtic next season. Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have both joined on free transfers, Jamie Murphy has made his loan move permanent, Ovie Ejaria has sealed a season-long loan move from Liverpool, while the defensive duo of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson have moved to Ibrox on permanent deals.
As such, there are many optimistic and expectant Light Blues supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be interested by recent reports linking their side with a move for Stoke City flop Saido Berahino.
And while the £7.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) has endured a testing time at the bet365 Stadium, the Gers could seriously reap the rewards from his arrival if he makes the move north of the border.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old has seriously struggled during his time in Staffordshire, with the forward having failed to net at all in 30 appearances for the Potters since his move there from West Brom back in 2017.
Thus, it’s clear that Berahino absolutely must get out of Stoke this summer in a bid to resurrect and reignite his career – a career that looked very promising just a matter of years ago having scored 20 times for West Brom in the 2014/15 season.
As such, while the last few years have been something of a write off for the former England youth international, it’s clear that there is a fine striker in the 24-year-old, and a fresh start somewhere else could be enough for him to re-discover those heights – Rangers could give him that.
Clearly, there is a feel-good factor around Ibrox at the moment following the appointment of Gerrard alongside several shrewd additions this summer – things appear to be heading in the right direction, and the positive atmosphere may be of interest to Berahino.
And if Gerrard feels that he can put an arm around the 24-year-old’s shoulder and spur him on to produce his best, it could well be a transfer masterstroke, as Berahino at his best, like he was a matter of years ago at West Brom, will be hugely influential and prolific in Scottish football.
Thus, while the Englishman has flopped somewhat recently, Rangers could seriously reap the rewards if they take a punt on the 24-year-old, as he has proven his ability in front of goal before.
