Football Insider says that Jak Alnwick’s career at Rangers could well be over.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper signed for the Gers from Port Vale in 2017, but he has made just 11 appearances for the Ibrox outfit since then. Instead, he has been shipped out on loan to Scunthorpe and then Blackpool, and clearly Steven Gerrard and co don’t seem too keen to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future.
His contract is set to run out in the summer, and it will not be extended, meaning he can leave on a free transfer.
There was a time when Alnwick was a rising star – he made six appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle during the 2014/15 season – but a damaging injury during his current spell at Blackpool has done him few favours.
This should come as little surprise to Rangers fans. The fact that he had already been sent out on loan to a League One side indicates that Gerrard has no space for him, and whilst seven clean sheets in 22 matches is far from disappointing, it is unlikely to be enough for one of the biggest clubs in Scotland – the former Liverpool man is showing his ruthless streak.
It seems that this decision has come at the right time – all involved can now move on.
