Impressive: Rangers eyeing up a loan move for Watford ace Andre Grey to boost Steven Gerrard’s options ahead of his second season at Ibrox.
Indeed, Gerrard has already been a busy man recruiting Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie ahead of the new campaign, while Greg Stewart will finalise a three-year switch once his Birmingham contract expires at the end of the current season.
Now Rangers are setting their sights on the big dogs and are considering an approach for Watford’s Andre Gray (as per the Herald) this summer that could see the 27-year-old marksman make his way north across the border on loan.
The forward joined Watford just two years ago for a club record £18million and has scored just five times in 33 appearances during his first season for the Hornets.
Gray has improved his tally this season having scored nine times in the 31 appearances he has made for Javi Gracia’s high-flying side and has bagged twice in his previous two matches against Southampton and Wolves.
Rangers could dangle the carrot in front of his face in an attempt to lull him away from Vicarage Road this summer, however, as Gerrard looks to bolster his options up top heading into his most important season in management.
We believe the move will depend entirely on the decision over the future of hothead star Alfredo Morelos, who could be offloaded in a big-money deal this coming window.
Morelos had only just signed a new contract in March that tied him down until 2021 but the Gers could look to cash in on their asset before he inevitably implodes in a shower of yellow and red cards and loses value exponentially.
His sale should give Gerrard the necessary funds to flex his muscles in the coming transfer market and open the opportunity to sign their Premier League man. And what an acquisition he would be.
Signing Jermain Defoe was one thing, but Andre Gray represents a whole new beast. Relatively young with his prime years still ahead of him, the speedy forward has all the qualities of a top-level Scottish Premiership forward and would give Rangers a huge boost both in Europe and in the domestic league, thanks to his experience at the top level of English football. Like so many who have made the leap have done before.
Admittedly, he is known for being an aggressive player like Morelos which might worry some. However unlike the seemingly semi-psychotic Colombian, Gray manages to keep a cap on his aggression and channels it in all the right ways i.e. not picking up a card at a rate of nine yellows, one double yellow and three reds.
Really could be a huge signing.
