According to a recent report from The Daily Record, Rangers are on the verge of sealing a deal for defender Borna Barisic. The 25-year-old currently plays his football in Croatia with top-flight side NK Osijek, who of course lost to Steven Gerrard’s men in the second qualifying round for the Europa League last week, although the left back clearly impressed to prompt Gerrard to make a reported £2.2 million move for the Croatia international.
And with that deal seemingly close to completion, as per recent reports, the new Gers chief must seek to complete his overhaul of the Rangers squad by adding Premier League flop Jordan Hugill, valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt.
Ultimately, Liverpool legend Gerrard has been extremely busy reinforcing the squad at Ibrox following his appointment as manager earlier this summer, with no fewer than ten new signings through the door at the Scottish giants, including the likes of Connor Goldson, Ovie Ejaria, and Ryan Kent.
However, the red card to striker Alfredo Morelos in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Aberdeen could leave Gerrard somewhat short in the forward ranks over the coming weeks, an area of the squad he has recently admitted needs strengthening to deal with the demands of both domestic and indeed European football this season.
And with Hugill seemingly without a future at Premier League side West Ham, alongside a fine goal-scoring record in the Championship, he could well be the man Gerrard targets to significantly bolster his striking department.
The 26-year-old only made the move to the London Stadium back in January after impressing at second tier outfit Preston North End, yet he mustered just 22 minutes of Premier League football for the Hammers in the second half of last season.
And with new manager Manuel Pellegrini overhauling the squad, much in the same way Gerrard is at Rangers, with many additions this summer, Hugill’s chances of commanding regular football have diminished even further.
And that is why Rangers must seek to make a move.
Yes, the Middlesbrough-born striker simply wasn’t able to make his mark in the Premier League last term, but one mustn’t forget that the 26-year-old scored 30 goals in 114 second tier matches for Preston earlier in his career, 20 goals of which coming in his last two seasons at Deepdale.
And with many arguing that the Championship is just as competitive and as tough as the Scottish Premiership, it’s plausible that Hugill could do an effective job up-front for Gerrard’s side, thus providing much-needed cover for Morelos both in the immediate future, given his suspension, and indeed over the course of the campaign.
Thus, with Barisic seemingly on his way to Ibrox, Gerrard must seek to complete his overhaul of the Rangers squad by landing a much-needed striker, namely West Ham’s Hugill.
