Coulibaly close: Now Gerrard must make key Rangers decision regarding 24-year-old ace

According to The Daily Mail, Rangers are closing in on a move for Angers midfielder Lassana Coulibaly. New manager Steven Gerrard has already been busy in bringing in several names to the Gers squad in a bid to bridge the gap to the dominant Celtic, but it is just as important that the 38-year-old retains some of the club’s most prized assets this summer, not least the hugely influential Josh Windass, a reported target for Premier League newcomers Cardiff City.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Light Blues finished a hefty 12 points adrift of Brendan Rodgers’ men in the Scottish Premiership table last term, and with a 4-0 defeat in their Scottish Cup semi-final meeting as well, it’s clear that a lot of work is needed to be done for Gerrard to take Rangers back to the summit of Scottish football.

And while signings are obviously needed for that to happen, it is just as imperative that the Liverpool legend retains some of his prized assets, and while Windass didn’t necessarily endear himself to Rangers fans last term, he certainly falls into that category.

The 24-year-old scored a mightily impressive 18 goals and laid on eight assists for the Gers last season in their run to third place in the top-flight, seeing him finish atop of the goal-scoring charts alongside fellow youngster Alfredo Morelos.

And while Daniel Candeias, Jamie Murphy, Jason Holt, and James Tavernier bettered Windass’ assists tally, only Morelos provided as many direct contributions as the Englishman over the course of the campaign, thus underling his importance to this Rangers team.

As such, it’s hardly surprising to see Cardiff express an interest in his services after a fine campaign in Scotland, but Gerrard has to retain Windass beyond the summer transfer deadline, as doing so would undoubtedly see the Gers take a step back ahead of the new season.

And for a reported £3 million, given that is the release clause reportedly in his contract, Rangers wouldn’t even be receiving a good fee for the 24-year-old, who could go on to become even better in the years to come.

Thus, while an exciting deal for Angers’ Coulibaly is seemingly imminent, it’s just as important that Gerrard keeps hold of some of Rangers’ best players, which means that he must make the key decision to try and retain Windass during the close season.
