David Bates’ progression must leave Rangers fans rueing what might have been

David Bates’ progression must leave Rangers fans rueing what might have been - Rangers

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, defender David Bates has no ‘regrets’ about leaving Rangers during the summer. The 22-year-old left Ibrox at the expiration of his contract during the close season after two years with the Scottish giants, yet he has since gone on to prove his worth in the second tier of German football with Hamburg.

And reports suggest that the centre back doesn’t regret leaving Steven Gerrard’s side during the summer, and while he may have no regrets, it’s likely that Rangers will be regretful given Bates’ evident improvements and progression since leaving Ibrox a few months ago.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the 22-year-old joined Rangers on a development loan from Raith Rovers back in the summer of 2016, a move he made permanent at the end of the temporary spell in January 2017 despite having not featured for the first team.

And it took Bates until April that year to earn his debut for the club, which paved the way for six further Scottish Premiership appearances for the Gers in their run to third place in the table under Pedro Caixinha.

Yet Bates failed to appear again under the Portuguese despite impressing in the latter stages of the 2016/17 campaign, with Graeme Murty the man to bring him in from the wilderness, and eventually give him 15 league appearances last term, in which time he netted on one occasion.

And it was under Murty in the second half of the 2017/18 campaign in which the 23-year-old really proved his credentials with several impressive displays in the heart of the Light Blues backline, which then made it something of a surprise that the defender left the club at the expiration of his contract – at the age of 22, he looked set for a bright future at the club.

In fact, letting Bates go left new boss Gerrard short of defensive cover to thus force him into spending money on signing Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson, who on the whole have done well but have endured some unconvincing moments in recent times – ultimately, keeping Bates really wouldn’t have gone amiss.

And when Rangers fans look at how well he is performing in Germany, which has prompted Alex McLeish to call him up to this week’s Scotland squad, they will surely be gutted that he’s not producing that level of performance in a Gers shirt.

The 22-year-old has started nine times for Hamburg in 2. Bundesliga and in that time has helped them to keep seven clean sheets, with their tally of eight wins and three draws from their opening 13 games seeing them sit top of the table at this early stage of the season.

And Bates has certainly played a part in that excellent defensive record, which has seen them concede just 12 times in the league so far, which surely must be the envy of Rangers fans given how good he could have been had he remained at Ibrox.

Yet the man himself says he has no ‘regrets’ about leaving Rangers, but Light Blues fans themselves surely must be gutted seeing his progression since leaving Ibrox – his progression may leave them rueing what have been had Bates remained at the Scottish giants.
