Alfredo Morelos was the hero yet again for Rangers as the Gers came from behind to beat St Johnstone at the weekend, though the Gers did slip up at home to Hibernian on Boxing Day.
Matty Kennedy had given the hosts the lead before half-time with a powerful effort, and Gerrard relied on his star forward to dig his side out of trouble yet again. The Colombian equalised just past the hour mark, heading home Kyle Lafferty’s cross. Morelos was on hand again to score his 19th goal of the season with only two minutes remaining on the clock to secure all three points for his side.
If Rangers are to keep up with Celtic in the second half of the season, Morelos will need to maintain his current scoring rate. It’s highly unlikely that the youngster can continue his incredible form the remainder of the campaign, therefore, Gerrard needs to lessen the goalscoring burden currently on his shoulders. Signing a new forward in January should be made a priority.
The ideal addition to the squad would be Willem forward – Fran Sol. Valued at just £3.6m by Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old is a graduate of Real Madrid’s youth academy, featuring for their C team before joining Villarreal on a free transfer. Sol also failed to make the grade with the Yellow Submarine and moved to Holland in the summer of 2016.
The forward has finally found his feet and has been scoring for fun since joining his current side. Sol ended his debut season in the country with ten goals, and his impressive record continued last season, scoring 16 league goals. Yet again, the Spaniard has been in red-hot form, netting 13 league goals in just 17 appearances so far. His arrival to Ibrox would give Gerrard another quality option in attack and allow the former Liverpool captain to keep his star forward fit and firing.
With his contract set to expire in the summer, Rangers could grab a January bargain.
