Further bad news emerges for despondent Rangers fans

Rangers supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side’s faint Scottish Premiership title hopes all but come to an end courtesy of a 3-2 defeat in the Old Firm derby.

Graeme Murty’s men went into their clash with leaders Celtic having won each of their preceding four league matches, a run of form which moved them to within six points of the Bhoys at the summit. And the Gers looked like they might well bridge the gap to just three points when they twice went ahead through Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias in the first half, only for Tom Rogic and Moussa Dembele to twice equalise before Odsonne Edouard fired home the winner for Brendan Rodgers’ side midway through the second half, thus condemning Rangers to a sixth home league defeat of the campaign.

Thus, there have been many despondent Light Blues fans in the Tavern in recent times, and further bad news could be on the horizon if a recent report from The Daily Record is anything to go by, which details that defender David Bates is set for three weeks out due to injury.

The 21-year-old made the permanent move to the Scottish giants back in January 2017 but it has been this term in which he has proven his worth to Murty’s side, starting each of their last nine Scottish Premiership games.

However, the centre-back was stretched off after just 23 minutes against Celtic on Sunday with a foot injury, and reports suggest that he has ‘fractured a bone’ and looks set for three weeks out of the side, thus plunging into doubt his participation in the Scottish Cup semi-final against their bitter rivals next month.

And given how influential Bates has been in the heart of the Rangers backline in recent times, this update is sure to come as further bad news to our already despondent Gers fans in the Tavern.

Landlord’s verdict: Rangers’ 3-2 loss to Celtic in the Old Firm derby on Sunday has all but ended their slim Scottish Premiership title hopes, and their misery appears to be have been further compounded by a key injury blow.

And that’s because reports suggest that defender David Bates, who was stretched off midway through the first half at Ibrox, is set for three weeks on the sidelines after reportedly ‘fracturing a bone in his foot’.

The 21-year-old has started nine successive league games to underline his status as one of Murty’s first-choice defenders – thus this injury update will come as further bad news to our already despondent and downbeat resident Rangers supporters.
