Rangers have been one of the busiest clubs in the world during the summer transfer window.
Following Steven Gerrard’s arrival at the club, a summer revamp was expected as the former Liverpool captain looks to put Rangers back on top of Scottish football. The ex-England international has wasted no time strengthening his ranks with ten new players arriving at Ibrox already this summer – Liverpool’s Ryan Kent became the last recruit on a season-long loan deal.
Gerrard kicked off the season with an aggregate victory over Shkupi which secured a place in the next round of the Europa League qualifiers. It’s unclear whether the Gers will add to their squad further in the window, as Gerrard could face problems introducing so many players to the team. Nevertheless, a move into the free agent market could be great business.
And, given he is without a contract after leaving West Brom at the end of June, signing Gareth McAuley could be a shrewd move.
Valued at £900,000 by Transfermarkt, the 38-year-old is searching for a new club after leaving the Baggies, thus bringing to an end a seven-year stint at the Hawthorns, in which time the Northern Ireland international played over 227 times.
And 200 of those appearances came in the Premier League, thus underlining has vast experience – experience which could be vital next season. Rangers need characters and leaders in the dressing room if they are to compete with Celtic next season, and McAuley could be everything that Bruno Alves wasn’t at Ibrox.
It’s a risk-free move as McAuley could be moved on if his first year at Ibrox doesn’t go to plan, yet the former Ipswich Town defender might surprise a few in the SPFL next season if he does indeed make the move to Gerrard’s side.
