Gerrard must capitalise on Villa’s struggles by luring ex-England teammate to Rangers

Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the remainder of the summer transfer window, what with new manager Steven Gerrard having already stamped his authority on things at Ibrox.

The Liverpool legend was confirmed as Graeme Murty’s replacement last month to begin work on June 1, although the 38-year-old was busy prior to his start date in making additions that he hopes can turn the Gers into title contenders. Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have both joined the club on free transfers, while on-loan star Jamie Murphy has made his temporary move permanent after an impressive spell in the second half of the campaign.

As such, there are many excited and expectant Rangers supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are intrigued by the recent developments coming out of Aston Villa, which detail potentially huge financial problems for the Championship club.

And with it likely that they’ll have to get rid of players this summer, Gerrard must seek to capitalise on Villa’s struggles by luring his ex-England teammate Micah Richards to Ibrox.

Ultimately, the 29-year-old has endured a testing time at Villa Park since his move there back in 2015, with the 13-times England international making just 31 appearances for the Midlands giants, and failing to appear at all for Steve Bruce’s men this time round.

Yes, injuries have certainly played a part in the former Manchester City defender’s struggles at Villa, but with just a year left on his current deal at the second tier outfit, and with Bruce’s side facing financial difficulties, he is one they may seek to offload this summer.

And Rangers should seek to pounce given the undoubted quality the 29-year-old possesses, and indeed the level of experience he has that could rub off on his Gers squad.

Ultimately, the versatile defender was a regular feature for City in the Premier League between 2005 and 2012, with the Englishman appearing 29 times in their run to their first ever title under Roberto Mancini six years ago.

Yes, things haven’t been plain sailing for Richards since then, but it’s clear that there is a good defender in the 29-year-old, and one that could seriously help Gerrard bolster the defensive ranks at Ibrox, ranks that conceded more goals than any other top seven side in the Scottish Premiership.

And having played 11 times together for England back in the day, Gerrard will know first-hand what a fine defender Richards is, and as such what a big influence he could be to his side both on and off the pitch next season.

Obviously, wages could well be an issue, but if Richards is seeking to get his career going again, a career that promised so much, after a turbulent spell at the Midlands outfit, he’d surely be willing to take some sort of pay-cut.

And a reunion with ex-England teammate Gerrard at Rangers could be exactly what he needs to reignite his footballing career, at the same time giving the Light Blues another excellent option at the back to take into the 2018/19 season.
