Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the rest of the summer transfer window, what with new manager Steven Gerrard very much stamping his authority on things at the Scottish giants.
The 37-year-old was confirmed as Graeme Murty’s successor back at the start of the month ahead of the 2018/19 season, but he has already been busy in adding players to the Gers squad ahead of a possible challenge to Celtic next time round. Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have both joined the Light Blues on a free transfer, while winger Jamie Murphy has been rewarded for his efforts in the second half of the season at Ibrox with a permanent deal.
And with still over two months until the start of the new Scottish Premiership season, there is plenty of time for more additions to follow those already at Rangers, one of which should be Tottenham’s £9 million-rated outcast Vincent Janssen (as per Transfermarkt).
The 23-year-old has endured a miserable time of it in North London since his move back in 2016, and as such needs a confidence-boosting spell away from the club once again in a bid to re-discover the form that earned him a move there in the first place – Rangers could offer him that.
Ultimately, the Netherlands international hasn’t just become a bad player overnight.
He bagged a stunning 31 goals in just 49 games for AZ back in the 2015/16 campaign to underline his credentials in front of goal, and Spurs boss Pochettino must have thought something of him to spend £17 million to bring him to Tottenham.
Thus, there is clearly a very good striker in Janssen, but having struggled to acclimatise to the Premier League last season, and having spent a testing year on loan at Fenerbahce this time round, one wonders what the future holds for the Dutchman.
Clearly, he needs a confidence booster of some sort, and moving north of the border to Rangers, where things appear to be heading in the right direction under Gerrard ahead of the new season, could seek to reignite his career once again.
Arguably, the standard in the Scottish Premiership isn’t as high as some of the other leagues in Europe, so if Janssen can re-discover his AZ form for the Light Blues next season, he will get chances to score, thus benefiting himself and indeed the club.
As such, while it would no doubt be an ambitious signing, Gerrard must seek to lure the 23-year-old to Rangers this summer as he seeks to continue his rebuild of the Scottish giants.
