Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the remainder of the summer transfer window, what with new manager Steven Gerrard having already stamped his authority on things at Ibrox.
The Liverpool legend was confirmed to be the club’s new manager earlier this month following the departure of Graeme Murty, with the 38-year-old set to take over ahead of the 2018/19 season. Yet the former England captain has already been busy making additions to the Gers squad, with Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield joining on free transfers, while Jamie Murphy has made his loan move permanent after an impressive spell in the second half of the campaign.
As such, there are many expectant and hopeful Rangers fans in the Tavern ahead of the rest of the summer market, with many likely to be intrigued by recent reports which express uncertainty over the future of Leeds United striker Marcus Antonsson.
The Swedish forward spent this season on loan at League One side Blackburn Rovers but they will not be pursuing a permanent move, which should open the door for Rangers to lure the £1.35 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) north of the border this summer.
Ultimately, the 27-year-old has struggled for regular game time at Leeds ever since his move there back in 2016, with just 21 senior appearances to show for his endeavours at Elland Road.
But he showed his quality this time round in scoring seven goals and laying on three assists for Blackburn in their League One title-winning campaign, bagging key goals in the first half of the season to set Tony Mowbray’s side on their way to a return to the Championship.
Yes, Antonsson hasn’t quite been able to prove his worth in English football’s second tier, having netted just once in 16 appearances for Leeds, but after a confidence-boosting spell at Blackburn, he might well be able to return to his best in the Scottish Premiership.
Arguably, the Scottish top-flight isn’t as competitive as the Championship, see the goal returns of the likes of Kris Boyd and Scott McDonald in years gone by, and with Rangers seemingly in need of further attacking ranks to help the likes of Alfredo Morelos up top, Antonsson could be that man.
And with his contract at Leeds up next summer, they may even be able to get a cut-price deal done for the 27-year-old, thus meaning that Gerrard’s side would lose little were things not to come off for the Swedish star at Ibrox.
Thus, with Antonsson’s future somewhat uncertain heading into the summer, Gerrard should seek to continue his Rangers rebuild with a move for the striker, in a bid to bolster his attacking ranks heading into the 2018/19 season.
