Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the new era under new manager Steven Gerrard, who replaced Graeme Murty in the Ibrox hotseat on June 1.
The Liverpool legend was confirmed as the Gers’ new boss last month to take over at the start of June, but he was already busy making plans and signing players prior to his start date last week. And that’s because the likes of Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have both joined the club on free transfers, while Jamie Murphy’s temporary stint at the club has turned into a permanent one such were his fine efforts in the second half of the season.
As such, there are many excited Light Blues supporters in the Tavern at present, and they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports coming out of Everton that new manager Marco Silva will indeed assess his squad over the coming weeks ahead of the new Premier League season.
And one man whose future is far from clear is midfielder’s Muhamed Besic, and were the Portuguese to indeed let the £4.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) leave Goodison Park this summer, Gerrard’s Rangers must be ready to pounce.
Ultimately, the 25-year-old struggled for regular gametime at the Merseyside outfit in the first half of the season, earning just two Premier League appearances for the Toffees, with his lowly position in the pecking order further exemplified by the fact he was shipped out on loan to Championship side Middlesbrough in January.
Yet the Bosnia and Herzegovina international certainly proved his worth to Tony Pulis’ side with 17 appearances in all competitions for the Teessiders, helping them to a top-six finish in the second tier.
And while Boro weren’t quite able to get the job done and return to the Premier League, eventually losing to Aston Villa in the play-off semi-finals, Besic certainly did his bit in aiding them in that quest – Pulis reportedly wants him back at the Riverside Stadium next term.
However, it all now depends on new Everton boss Silva and whether he sees a part for Besic to play in his Toffees revolution – if he doesn’t, Gerrard and Rangers must be ready to pounce as well.
Clearly, the 25-year-old has genuine Premier League quality and, but for a cruciate ligament injury back in August 2016, it’s plausible that he’d be in and around the Everton first team now.
But having played regular football at Middlesbrough as part of his rehabilitation, the Bosnian surely won’t be far away from his best form, and at the age of 25, he’d add an enormous amount of quality to a Gers side seeking to bridge the gap to Celtic next season.
And if Gerrard is serious about doing just that next time round, quality additions, like Besic, are needed over the summer, with the midfielder able to run the show in the middle of the park using his fine skills on the ball, alongside a relentless work-rate and energy off it.
Obviously, the ball is very much in Everton’s court as to the future of the 25-year-old, but if Silva does indeed let him leave this summer, Rangers must be ready to make a move for the influential midfielder.
