Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the rest of the summer transfer window, what with new manager Steven Gerrard having already stamped his authority on things at Ibrox.
The Liverpool legend was confirmed as Graeme Murty’s replacement last month to take over on June 1, yet the 38-year-old was busy prior to his start date in making signings that he hopes can improve the squad enough to challenge Celtic next season. Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have both joined the Gers on free transfers, Jamie Murphy has turned his loan move into a permanent deal, and Ovie Ejaria has joined the club on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool.
As such, there are many excited Light Blues supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent developments at Aston Villa, what with financial problems seemingly likely for the Championship side.
And Gerrard must seek to take advantage of Villa’s plight by making a move for £2.7 million-rated ace Ahmed Elmohamady (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, it is looking likely that Steve Bruce’s side will have to cash in on some players this summer to stay afloat heading into the new 2018/19 season, and after moving from Hull City last summer, 30-year-old Elmohamady is one who could be on his way out.
And given the vast amount of experience he has at the top level, alongside the possibility that Rangers could lose James Tavernier this summer, Gerrard’s men should look to land the Egypt international.
The right back laid on five assists in 45 Championship appearances for the Villans to underline his credentials in the final third of the pitch, and with contributing in that area becoming an increasingly expected part of the modern-day full back’s game, Elmohamady certain has that in his locker.
And any possible Tavernier replacement, what with the Englishman having been linked with a move away in the last few weeks, must be able to provide that attacking threat given the Rangers star scored nine goals and laid on nine assists for the Scottish giants this term.
But with 165 Premier League appearances under his belt, as well as a whole host at Championship level, the 30-year-old would also bring a wealth of experience to Gerrard’s squad ahead of the new season, which could be invaluable in their quest to bridge the gap to Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.
Thus, with Villa seemingly struggling financially, alongside the possibility that Tavernier could leave, Gerrard must seek to take advantage by making a move for the experienced Elmohamady this summer.
