Former Glasgow Rangers striker Billy Dodds has urged the club to sign Livingston target man Lyndon Dykes this summer.
The Scottish Sun reported last month that ‘Gers boss Steven Gerrard has the 24-year-old on his transfer wish list for the upcoming window, with the same report claiming that Alfredo Morelos would leave Ibrox if his asking price is met.
Dodds is adamant that the Australia-born striker would be a shrewd addition for the Light Blues, telling The Scottish Sun: “I think Rangers should go and try and bring in Lyndon Dykes…There are gems to be had in Scotland and Dykes is someone who has the quality to play for Rangers. Boys like him don’t come around too often and I would be pushing the boat out to get him this summer.”
Dykes has indeed enjoyed a fine season with Livingston, for whom he scored 12 goals and supplied 10 assists in 33 games during 2019/20 (as per TransferMarkt). Only Christian Doidge and Sam Cosgrove netted more Premiership goals from players outside of the top two clubs, with Dykes proving that he is not just a mere flat-track bully by netting in his team’s win over Celtic last October.
Dodds added: “Even if Rangers keep hold of Morelos they need to get more cover in, as we know what has happened during the last few seasons. Rangers at times couldn’t go route one as Morelos and Defoe, while trying their best, aren’t the greatest in the air.
“Dykes would give them an entirely different option and give teams something extra to think about. I saw him against Rangers twice last season and he was a handful. He gave the defenders a hard game.”
The 51-year-old makes a good point about Dykes’ aerial strength in comparison to the two ‘Gers strikers. The Livingston man has scored four headers this season, accounting for 33.3% of his overall goals tally. Seven of Morelos’ 29 goals this term came with his head (24.1%), while 17-goal Defoe scored only one header in the 2019/20 season (5.9%).
Even if the Light Blues keep Morelos and persevere with him as their first-choice striker, Dykes could be a potent aerial option to spring from the bench and make a defining difference in tight games.
Can you see the 'Gers making a move for Lyndon Dykes this summer?
Dodds concluded: “He is the perfect buy for Rangers and the type of player that Gerrard is going to need if he is to stop Celtic.”
Again the ex-‘Gers striker is on the button here. Excellent as Morelos has been over the course of the season, he scored only once in 2020 after being so prolific up to the end of December (as per TransferMarkt).
In home matches such as the 0-0 draw against Aberdeen and 0-1 loss to Hamilton, Dykes could have been the ideal option to whom to turn as a game-changer, and his potential addition could ensure that Gerrard’s team don’t drop such sloppy points in 2020/21 as they seek to wrestle the Premiership crown back from their neighbours.
