Rangers: Alan Hutton bang on the money in drooling over transfer target - Rangers

Former Scotland international defender Alan Hutton has suggested that it would be huge statement of intent if Rangers could secure the signing of Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne in the upcoming transfer window.

The 28-year-old will be a free agent in a few months with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign (Transfermarkt) and according to Football Insider the Gers are considering trying to take him to Ibrox, although he would have to take a significant pay cut.

Hutton believes that signing a player of Clyne’s calibre would show great ambition from Rangers and that he would be a great addition to Steven Gerrard’s squad.

Speaking about how big a coup it would be if the former Southampton right-back did move north of the border, Hutton told Football Insider: “Massive, we’re talking about an international player. Yes, he’s had his ups and downs, his problems within his career but he’s still pretty young.

“We know how good he can be, he was a regular for Liverpool for a long time. His qualities are there for all to see. Getting a player like that shows the direction Rangers are wanting to go – a top-quality player would add so much talent to the squad already. It would be a big test for Tavernier if he was to come in.

“It would be a great fight – two top-quality players fighting for the jersey.”

Hutton certainly has a point here and if Rangers did sign Clyne it would be massive for them. Whilst the defender has seen his career stall slightly in recent years, that has largely been due to the ridiculously good form of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Prior to losing his place at Anfield he was a regular in the team for some time and in the 16/17 season he played 37 league games, helping the Reds keep 12 clean sheets and averaging 2.2 tackles per game whilst also winning 3.3 ground duels per match too (SofaScore).

At just 28-years-old, Clyne certainly has plenty of miles left in the tank if he can remain injury free. Signing a player from the current European champions who is the right side of 30 and a 14-time England international to boot would show that the Gers mean business.

How many times have Rangers won the Scottish Premiership?

Added to that the current incumbent of the right-back position at Ibrox, captain James Tavernier, has been criticised by some sections of the Rangers fanbase this season (Daily Mail) who believe that he isn’t good enough. Replacing him with such a high-profile name would send out a powerful message and could help them get closer to Celtic in the title race next term having fallen well short this year (BBC Sport).
