Alan Hutton has told Football Insider that it could be difficult for Glasgow Rangers to hold on to Connor Goldson if some of the bigger Premier League teams come calling.
The Gers signed the 27-year-old for £3m in 2018 from Brighton, and he has since become a rock at the back for Steven Gerrard’s side, already featuring 105 times across two campaigns. Last term, the Ibrox outfit conceded just 19 goals in the Scottish Premiership, with Goldson playing in all 29 matches before the campaign was cut short due to the current pandemic.
There has been interest from the likes of Leeds, West Ham and West Brom, and Hutton clearly believes the Gers could have an issue keeping hold of him. He said:
“It’s going to be difficult if some of the bigger teams come calling but I think maybe it’s time that Rangers look to offer him a new contract, maybe hold him down if you like.
“He’s 27 now, he’s obviously getting to the peak, he’ll probably be looking to tie himself down for the next few years so hopefully it is Rangers because he has done excellently well.
“However, I think if the price is right then maybe it’s one Rangers will look to cash in on.”
A new contract, and a higher wage, may have an effect on Goldson if he is undecided on where his future lies, but the attraction of the English Premier League may be too strong to resist. Whilst Glasgow Rangers are a prestigious club well known across the planet, the fact of the matter is that Scotland cannot match the quality and depth of the game south of the border.
Should Rangers sell Goldson?
Also, given the current situation, a big bid from any of those sides previously mentioned could convince the 54-time Scottish champions to part ways. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the centre-back.
