Jamie Redknapp believes it is only a matter of time before Steven Gerrard swaps Glasgow Rangers for Liverpool.
The Gers boss is, of course, a Reds legend, having made over 700 appearances for the club during an illustrious playing career that saw him win the Champions League in 2005. In 2018, he took the plunge into management, taking the job at Ibrox. So far, he has failed to win any silverware, but that has not stopped Redknapp suggesting he will move to Anfield when he departs Scotland.
“I wasn’t sure if Stevie would go into management. It’s a bit like Frank Lampard. They’ve both had great careers, won everything, and I could see them just doing punditry, take the easy option.
“But they haven’t, they’ve gone in at the sharp end.
“Stevie is in Scotland and doing well. It’s not easy because Celtic are so strong. But Stevie has got it, you can see that.
“I think a few years at Rangers, and as long as he doesn’t make too many mistakes, it’s only a question of time before he manages Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp decides to go.”
It does seem written into the stars given Gerrard’s connection with his former side, and whilst many Gers fans would not like to admit it, it would be a significant step up from the Scottish Premiership.
Has Steven Gerrard been a success at Rangers?
However, surely the likelihood of him getting the job will be better if he proves to be a roaring success north of the border, and so far, that is not the case. The Europa League run this year, which saw them reach the Round of 16 before the tournament was suspended due to the current pandemic, is a positive, but the fact of the matter is, they were 13 points behind league leaders Celtic before the campaign was brought to a close.
Both Gerrard and the 54-time Scottish champions can work together to achieve their goals. Whilst the former England international’s departure may be a disappointment, the Gers would probably take it if it came following a run of trophies. In that scenario, everyone is a winner.
