Former SPFL striker Noel Whelan believes that Rhian Brewster could be an ideal loan acquisition for Glasgow Rangers, who have been linked with the young Liverpool forward.
Football Insider reported that the 20-year-old is among Steven Gerrard’s transfer targets this summer, with the manager potentially utilising his Anfield connections once again.
Whelan thinks that Gerrard is already well aware of the qualities that Brewster possesses and believes he could get the best out of the youngster.
He told Football Insider: “Even if Alfredo Morelos does not leave Ibrox this summer, you always need strikers. Brewster has been tipped for greatness at Liverpool. He’s been at Swansea this season and has done fantastically.
“He is the right age and Steven Gerrard knows all about him. Steven has seen him come through the ranks and knows what attributes he possesses. He knows that Brewster is a player he can trust and improve.”
Whelan has correctly identified the familiarity that already exists between the two parties, with Gerrard having managed Brewster in their shared time with Liverpool’s under-18 setup. The striker has since gone on to make three senior Reds appearances this season before joining Swansea on loan, where he had struck four goals in 11 games prior to the coronavirus-enforced postponement of English football.
Gerrard has a notable track record of bringing players to Ibrox from his former club, but with rather mixed results. Ryan Kent has proven a shrewd acquisition, with 14 goals and 13 assists in 75 ‘Gers appearances. However, others have not fared out so well.
Should Rangers sign Rhian Brewster?
Sheyi Ojo began this season impressively but then failed to score in six months and has been lambasted by many ‘Gers fans for his ineffective performances. Jon Flanagan was also the target of some supporters’ ire before his release from the club last month, while Jordan Rossiter has also been let go after failing to establish himself at Ibrox during an injury-ravaged spell with the Light Blues.
Therefore, reservations about Gerrard raiding Liverpool yet again would be understandable, although Brewster’s fine form for Swansea earlier in the year suggests that he could be a very potent option when given a run of games. Also, with top scorer Morelos being linked with numerous Premier League clubs (as per Leicestershire Live), the ‘Gers could need to bolster their attacking options this summer, so they could do a lot worse than bring in the Reds youngster on loan for 2020/21.
