Glasgow Rangers look set to fall short in their reported pursuit of teenage West Brom forward Rayhaan Tulloch.
Football Insider reported that the 19-year-old, who was also a target for third-placed Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, is set to snub all transfer interest in him and commit his future to the Baggies by signing a new long-term deal at The Hawthorns.
The Light Blues’ interest in the youngster dates back to January, when Football Insider claimed that they had entered preliminary talks with him about a possible move to Ibrox.
Tulloch, a versatile young attacker who is equally adept at playing on either flank or at centre-forward, has impressed with West Brom’s under-23 side this season, scoring nine goals and supplying four assists in 14 Premier League 2 outings. [via TransferMarkt]
That form earned him three substitute appearances for the first team in the FA Cup, featuring against Premier League opposition in West Ham and Newcastle, while he was also an unused substitute for a Championship fixture against Luton in February. [via TransferMarkt]
With only five senior appearances in his career so far, he would likely have been considered a player for the future by the ‘Gers rather than someone for the here-and-now. However, given the sparsity of potent attacking options at Ibrox, he may have been fast-tracked relatively quickly into Steven Gerrard’s first team.
Aside from the 46-goal haul of centre-forwards Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe, the Light Blues do not have many reliable scorers. Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent were their only two wingers to hit more than five goals this season, with most of the former’s tally coming from central midfield.
Despite his inexperience at senior level, Tulloch’s scoring figures for West Brom’s underage teams suggest that he could become a potent scorer in the first team. Given the lack of output from Gerrard’s wide options, he should certainly have been a more than useful addition at Ibrox.
Are you disappointed that the 'Gers are set to miss out on Rayhaan Tulloch?
Also, if a club like Champions League quarter-finalists RB Leipzig were interested in him, that hints at the vastness of the teenager’s potential. Tulloch may have made what he feels is the best decision for his career but, from a ‘Gers perspective, it feels like a real opportunity missed.
