Glasgow Rangers: Alen Petrovic expects Borna Barisic to move to the Premier League

Glasgow Rangers: Alen Petrovic expects Borna Barisic to move to the Premier League - Rangers

NK Osijek director Alen Petrovic has said he expects Borna Barisic to move to the Premier League in the future.

The Gers signed the 27-year-old for a fee of £2.2m from the Croatian club in 2018, and the left-back has flourished north of the border. In his first campaign under Steven Gerrard, he was in and out of the side, making just 22 appearances in all competitions, but during the 2019/20 season he really came to the fore – by the time the term was ended prematurely, he had amassed 14 assists in 39 matches in all competitions.

From who did Rangers sign Alfredo Morelos?

Petrovic believes that Barisic’s journey is not yet over, and he expects him to move south at some point. He said:

“Borna is ready to take the next step in his career but I’m speaking now as a fan and a friend and not in my official capacity.

“He’s ready for the Premier League. It would be a big surprise if he ends up in some other league, not least because he is already playing in the United Kingdom.”

£2.16m-valued Barisic – as per Transfermarkt – has already been linked with a move to the English top tier – Jose Mourinho is said to be a fan, with his side Tottenham Hotspur believed to be interested in a move. The Gers reportedly wanted £22m to part ways with him, but it is unlikely they would demand the same fee now in the midst of a pandemic.

Will Barisic be at Rangers next season?

The signature of Calvin Bassey from Leicester City may be an indication that Gerrard has a contingency plan for life without the Croatia international but still, losing Barisic would be a blow to the Ibrox outfit’s hopes of getting their hands on some silverware next term.
