Glasgow Rangers are set to face competition from West Bromwich Albion as they look to sign Peterborough’s Ivan Toney, according to Football Insider.
The Gers have been previously linked with a move for Toney, with Barry Fry saying that the Ibrox outfit’s interest had been confirmed to him via agents (The Daily Mail via The Scottish Sun).
He also said that whilst Toney was for sale, he would cost £15m. Now, Football Insider report that West Brom would also like to sign the striker.
Toney was in stunning form before League One was brought to a premature end due to the current pandemic. In 32 matches, he managed 24 goals and six assists, leading the division’s goalscoring charts in the process, whilst he also bagged two in four matches in the FA Cup.
If a realistic chance to sign him arose, Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson would be mad not to take him to Scotland. However, it is almost impossible for them to justify spending the kind of money Fry is reportedly looking for. That would be the biggest ever fee the 54-time Scottish champions have paid for a player, and whilst Toney has performed in the lower leagues, he has just two top-tier appearances to his name.

Even as a Championship side, West Brom are far more likely to have the funds to complete such a signature, especially as they close in on promotion to the Premier League – as it stands, there are in second place and are six points ahead of third. Unless the demands lower significantly, the Gers are all but out of the race.
