According to recent comments from Josh Windass for Open Goal (via The Scotsman), the 24-year-old believes that Rangers could have got more from his departure. The attacker made the move to Ibrox back in 2016 after a short stint at Accrington Stanley, and after two reasonably successful seasons north of the border, Championship side Wigan Athletic lured him back to England during the recent summer transfer window.
And the man himself reckons that Steven Gerrard’s Gers could have got more than the £2.5 million they received for the 24-year-old, and after Windass’ fine efforts for the Light Blues between 2016 and 2018, the Englishman is absolutely spot on.
Ultimately, Windass made the move to Rangers little over two years ago at the expiration of his contract at Accrington, yet he endured a testing debut season at Ibrox in netting just once in 27 appearances in all competitions.
Various injury issues certainly played a part in the 24-year-old’s struggles in the 2016/17 campaign, and that was evidenced last season given, when fully fit and firing, the attacker delivered more often than not for the Scottish giants.
In fact, Windass finished the season with a mightily impressive 18 goals and eight assists in all competitions to help Rangers finish third in the Scottish Premiership and indeed reach the last four of the Scottish Cup – ending up joint-top of the goal-scoring charts alongside Colombian star Alfredo Morelos.
As such, it’s pretty clear that the 24-year-old was a vital player for the Light Blues last season and as such would have taken much form and confidence into the new era under Gerrard – and at the age of 24, he would only likely improved under the Liverpool legend.
And while there was much talk of a move away for the attacker during the summer, what with his relationship with Rangers supporters seemingly strained after two years at the club, it still came as something of a surprise that the club were happy to do a deal for a reported £2.5 million – after the season he had, they could have well held out for more.
Yes, some are less than complementary about the quality and standard of the Scottish Premiership, but when Morelos, who scored the same amount as Windass last term, was being touted for a big money move to China, the Gers could have surely got more than £2.5 million for Windass.
And while the club may not have missed the 24-year-old too greatly in the early stages of this season, given they are currently the top-scorers in the Scottish Premiership, it appears that they did miss a trick when it came to selling him – they could have easily got more for the £1.35 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt).
