Kieran Dowell could be the difference in Rangers’ pursuit of title no.55

According to a recent report from The Daily Record, Rangers are interested in landing young attacker Kieran Dowell in the January transfer window. The 21-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League outfit Everton having come up through the youth ranks at Goodison Park, but a lack of game time under new manager Marco Silva this term has thrown his immediate future at the club into doubt.

And reports suggest that Gerrard’s Rangers, currently sat top of the Scottish Premiership, are keen on the £2.7 million-rated sensation (as per Transfermarkt), which is a move the Gers simply have to make to seriously strengthen their title hopes in the second half of the season.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, Liverpool legend Gerrard has made a fine start to life at Ibrox by leading Rangers to top spot in the division courtesy of a 2-1 win at Hearts on Sunday, with it clear that the Light Blues are going to provide a serious challenge to seven-times defending champions Celtic in the New Year.

And while the Gers have shipped double the amount of goals as Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic, who have kept a sensational nine clean sheets in their 13 games so far, Gerrard’s side are the top-scorers in the division with an impressive 37 goals from their 14 matches – going forward, they will cause any team in the league huge problems.

And while they have improved defensively, their strength is certainly going forward with the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Scott Arfield, and Kyle Lafferty, so adding further to those ranks is only likely to make the Gers even more difficult to contain – it could pave the way for their return to the Scottish summit.

And adding the hugely talented Dowell, who shone on loan at Championship side Nottingham Forest last term, is the sort of signing that can help take them to title number 55, and their first since 2011.

The 21-year-old has only mustered five senior appearances for Everton since breaking through into the first team at Goodison Park, and with only two of those coming under new boss Silva this term, it’s clear that he is some way down the Toffees pecking order.

However, Rangers fans only need look at last season to know that Dowell could add a huge amount of creativity and flair to the attacking ranks at Ibrox, what with the England Under-21 international netting nine goals and laying on four assists for Forest in the Championship – a division viewed as one of the most competitive in European football.

Thus, for the 21-year-old to prove his worth in English football’s second tier sets him up brilliantly for his future in the game, and the chance to go and test himself at one of the biggest clubs in the continent in Rangers must surely be of keen interest.

Significantly, he’d add a huge amount of talent to Gerrard’s already strong attacking ranks, and given teams are struggling to contain them at present, they are going to prove more deadly with his arrival.

As such, with Rangers very much in title contention, what business they conduct in January will likely have a huge say in where the Scottish Premiership crowns ends up come May – if the Gers can land Dowell, it could prove to be the difference in their pursuit of title number 55.
