Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been somewhat quieter in recent times after seeing their side fail to record back-to-back wins in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.
Steven Gerrard’s men went into their clash with Motherwell at Fir Park having beaten St Mirren in their previous league encounter, as well as edging past Russian side Ufa in the first leg of their Europa League play-off. And although the Gers led 3-2 heading into injury time on Sunday, they were unable to see the game out as a Peter Hartley strike secured a point for Stephen Robinson’s side, thus leaving Rangers with five points from their opening three league matches.
Thus, there have been some frustrated Light Blues fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can get the job done against Ufa tonight to thus qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.
Yet some still feel that further reinforcements may be needed before tomorrow’s Scottish transfer deadline, and one man who would surely bolster the Rangers ranks is Liverpool outcast Lazar Markovic, valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt.
The 24-year-old has found things tricky at Anfield since moving there back in 2014, to the point that he has since been shipped out on four different loan spells to Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon, Hull City, and Anderlecht in a bid for regular first team football.
And with his contract up at the Merseyside club next summer, it appears that manager Jurgen Klopp is happy to let him leave in the last knockings of the European deadline, with Anderlecht and Standard Liege reportedly keen on the winger, the former where the 24-year-old spent a short spell earlier this year.
Yet Gerrard must seek to ask his former employers the question regarding Markovic, as the Serbia international could well provide the Rangers chief with the ideal replacement for the injured Jamie Murphy.
Scotland international Murphy has been ruled out for the entirety of the 2018/19 campaign after suffering a knee injury against Kilmarnock earlier this month, which is sure to come as a blow to the Light Blues given how influential the winger has been both in the early phase of this season, and indeed during his loan spell at Ibrox last time round.
Yet the arrival of the talented Markovic could go some way to compensating for the 28-year-old’s absence, as although he hasn’t shown his best form at Liverpool, the Serbian clearly has ability down the flanks.
The 24-year-old earned a move to Liverpool back in 2014 after scoring seven times and laying on five assists for Benfica the season before, and he has since shown glimpses of promise in loan spells at Fenerbahce and Hull City, netting twice in 14 games for the latter in the 2016/17 campaign.
And at the tender age of 24, Markovic is still young and will surely only get better the more football he plays, and the chance to link up with former Liverpool teammate Gerrard at Rangers may well be of interest to the Serbia international.
As such, Rangers must act quickly to fend off the competition and lure the winger to Ibrox, which could give Gerrard his ideal replacement for the injured Murphy.
