Football Insider says Rangers have set their sights on Josh Maja as they assess potential Alfredo Morelos replacements.
Morelos is the target of a number of clubs across Europe, with no less than nine being linked with the Colombia international in the latest report from goal.com including Newcastle United and Aston Villa.
His departure from Ibrox would leave a huge hole that Steven Gerrard would need to fill, but the club’s Sporting Director Ross Wilson is targetting the 21-year-old front man, who currently plays for Bordeaux.
Many football fans will know Maja from the latest series of Sunderland Til I Die, which came to Netflix at the start of the month. As the Black Cats looked for promotion from League One, the Nigeria international was the star of the show, in the first half of the season at least, scoring 15 times in 24 matches in the third tier of English football.
However, they were unable to keep hold of him, with him eventually joining Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux for just £1.5m towards the end of January 2019 (Chronicle). He managed two goals in eight matches last term and, although he is not a regular in France this campaign, he still has eight strikes in 24 (Transfermarkt).
Morelos, who has already bagged 29 times this term, would be a huge loss should he depart, but Rangers must prepare for the inevitable. Maja’s arrival, though, would indicate that the Gers are not messing around. Already an international and with goals in one of Europe’s top five leagues, his arrival would be a coup.
It remains to be seen whether they could attract the £6.3m-valued ace – as per Transfermarkt, but if they did get him then he could be the ideal replacement for the Colombian.
