Positive boost for Rangers finally emerges

Rangers supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side thump St Johnstone 4-1 at McDiarmid Park on Tuesday night to move to within six points of Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic.

Graeme Murty’s men went into their clash with the Perth-based outfit off the back of easing past Hearts 2-0 in their preceding league encounter, a result which saw them leapfrog Aberdeen into second place in the table following their defeat against Brendan Rodgers’ Bhoys. And the Gers reduced the gap to the defending champions to just six points on Tuesday night as goals from James Tavernier, Josh Windass, Sean Goss, and Alfredo Morelos secured a comprehensive victory for the Light Blues, setting them up perfectly for their Scottish Cup tie against Falkirk on Sunday.

Thus, there have been many delighted Rangers fans in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is likely to have got even better if a recent report from The Daily Record is anything to go by, which suggests that Celtic defender Mikael Lustig may miss the Old Firm derby next weekend due to suspension.

The 31-year-old right-back made the move to Parkhead back in 2012 and has since then gone on to appear 225 times for the Scottish giants, in which time he has scored 19 goals and laid on 30 assists.

Yet the Sweden international was sent off in Celtic’s 2-0 success over Aberdeen on Sunday as such will serve a one-match suspension, which was pencilled in for this evening’s clash against Dundee only for that game to be called off due to the weather.

As such, reports suggest that Lustig may well miss the Old Firm derby against Rangers on March 11, in news which is sure to give our resident Gers fans some respite given the recent injury concerns surrounding Declan John, who missed Tuesday’s win over St Johnstone, and Jamie Murphy, who is reportedly a doubt for the clash at Ibrox after picking up a foot problem at McDiarmid Park.

Landlord’s verdict: Rangers beat St Johnstone on Tuesday night to move to within six points of leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premiership ahead of the Old Firm derby at Ibrox in little over a weeks’ time, although they have some injury concerns heading into that clash.

Declan John missed the 4-1 win at St Johnstone on Tuesday night through injury while in-form winger Jamie Murphy hobbled off with a foot problem, plunging the duo’s availability for the derby on March 11 into huge doubt.

Nonetheless, there appears to finally be some respite for our resident Rangers fans, as the postponement of tonight’s clash between Celtic and Dundee increases the possibility that Bhoys defender Mikael Lustig will be suspended for the Old Firm derby, given he needs to serve a one-match ban for his recent red card against Aberdeen.

The game could be rearranged before then, but it does look like the Celtic right-back may miss the trip to Rangers, in a positive boost which is likely to please our resident Light Blues supporters.
