It’s set to be a massive summer for Steven Gerrard, who faces the task of improving his Rangers side to such a degree that they can finally compete for the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers looked set to challenge for the league this season after a blistering start to the campaign, but of course, the wheels eventually fell off as Celtic yet again swooped in to seal the title, but next season is already looking promising.
Gerrard has moved in quick to secure signings for next season with Jack Hastie and Jordan Jones already confirmed as new Ibrox arrivals for the summer, and according to the Scottish Sun, the club have offered Stade Rennais defender Mexer a three-year deal upon the end of his contract.
With Rangers needing to strengthen in the defence and Mexer a player who would improve the quality of the backline, what are the potential consequences of the centre-back joining the Glaswegian club?
Ready-made replacement for Worrall
With Joe Worrall returning back to parent club Nottingham Forest this summer, Mexer would be a ready-made replacement for the defender that has impressed this season at the Ibrox.
The 22-year-old has been a solid option for Rangers, but Mexer’s signing would surely categorically rule out any move back in for Worrall this summer, but given the Rennais defender’s experience in a top-five European league as well as international experience, the Mozambique international would slot nicely in Gerrard’s starting XI for next season.
Goldson finds perfect partner
With a quality addition joining Rangers, no player in the team will benefit more than Connor Goldson.
The former Brighton defender has been a rock for Rangers this season, making over 50 appearances for the Scottish giants and firmly establishing himself as an important first-team player, and partnered alongside a player as good as Mexer, Goldson could find himself getting even better as a defender learning with the Rennais centre-back.
Rangers fans, would you take Mexer at the club? Let us know!
