Potentially big setback emerges for Graeme Murty and Rangers

Rangers supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side thump Falkirk 4-1 in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup last time out, thus setting them up perfectly for Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

Graeme Murty’s men got past Fraserburgh and Ayr United to reach the last eight of the competition, a competition they have won on 33 occasions in the past, but not at all since 2009. Yet the Light Blues took another step towards the title on Sunday as a hat-trick from Jason Cummings as well as an own goal from Aaron Muirhead secured a comfortable victory for the Scottish giants, thus setting up a semi-final clash with Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic next month, whom they face in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Rangers fans in the Tavern in the last few days, although they are unlikely to be thrilled by a recent report from The Scottish Sun, which suggests that defender Russell Martin is a huge doubt for this weekend’s Old Firm clash.

The 32-year-old made the move north of the border during the January transfer window on loan from Championship outfit Norwich City, and he has since gone on to appear eight times for the Gers, including each of their last seven league matches.

Yet recent reports have detailed a potentially big setback for manager Murty, as Martin has reportedly damaged his back in training this week, and as such is a huge doubt for the visit of Rodgers’ Bhoys this weekend.

And this injury update is unlikely to thrill our resident Rangers fans ahead of Sunday’s clash, a game in which victory would move them to within three points of their bitter rivals at the top of the division.

Landlord’s verdict: Russell Martin has certainly proven his worth to Rangers since his loan move from Norwich City in January, having started each of their last seven Scottish Premiership matches to suggest that he is a first-choice under manager Graeme Murty.

Yet the Gers boss looks set to have been dealt a big setback as reports suggest that the 32-year-old defender is a huge doubt for Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox, having reportedly injured his back in training during the week.

Martin reportedly missed a session on Thursday to seriously plunge his participation on Sunday into doubt, and given how influential he has been in the last six weeks or so, this is sure to come as a big blow to Murty and indeed the club’s supporters.
