Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has urged current Ibrox stalwart, Connor Goldson, to resist the overtures of multiple England-based suitors and remain with the club for the time being.
According to Football Insider, the 27-year-old has been targeted by West Ham, Fulham, Leeds and West Brom in the January transfer window, which closes this Friday. Football Insider also claimed that Steven Gerrard values the defender at £6m and is reluctant to let him leave without having a replacement lined up.
Hutton has advised the Rangers centre-back that he should remain at Ibrox given the realistic possibility of silverware and opportunities to play in European competitions. He told Football Insider: “Money talks. I understand the draw of down south is a big opportunity for him but let us not kid ourselves. That is the Championship. Rangers are still in Europe, going for the league so there are still trophies to be had and won at Rangers. He has been a key member of the team and played a lot of games.
“I would not like to see him leave. It is neck and neck in the league and you do not want to see the best players leave. Gerrard is building something special and I do hope that he does stay because he is an integral part of the team. There is unfinished business and I would like to see him concentrate on Rangers for now.”
Hutton is right to point out to Goldson that the English centre-back could taste tangible success if he stays put at Rangers instead of joining one of his reported suitors. The Light Blues are putting up a strong challenge to Celtic in the Premiership title race as they hunt for a first top-flight crown since 2011 while they also have European football to enjoy next month after reaching the knockout rounds of the Europa League, the furthest they have progressed in the tournament for nine years.
Of the four English clubs claimed by Football Insider to be interested in the defender, only West Ham are in the Premier League and they find themselves in the thick of a relegation battle. West Brom, Leeds and Fulham are all currently in the Championship, even though all three clubs have a decent chance of promotion to the top flight. However, none of those will be involved in Europe next season, barring a remarkable surge in form from the Hammers or an FA Cup triumph for the Baggies.
Also, as Hutton has said, Goldson is a core part of Rangers’ line-up – indeed, with more than 3,400 minutes of football played this season, he is Gerrard’s most-used player in the current campaign. He has started every Premiership match so far in 2019/20 and has not missed a minute of their 14-game European run. If he is available for selection, he almost certainly starts at Ibrox.
The 27-year-old has a realistic chance of winning a trophy for the ‘Gers and clearly has the trust of his manager, so Hutton is correct to advise him that, amid reported transfer interest from England, his lot at Rangers is quite a good one.
