Alexander Buttner has revealed he turned down the opportunity to join Rangers about a possible January switch, according to quotes sourced by the Daily Record.
The former Manchester United full-back will be heading to the MLS and teaming up with New England Revolution after a disappointing spell in Holland with Vitesse Arnhem, although it does not appear as though he was short of offers.
The 30-year-old revealed he had rejected a number of approaches from clubs across Europe, including a last-ditch attempt by Steven Gerrard.
“There was a lot of interest in me this summer. Vitesse wanted me to stay for three years and clubs like Celtic, Spal, Fenerbahce and Apoel Nicosia all made their interest known,” he said.
“In fact, just this week before I agreed to sign for the Revs, Rangers and Stoke City tried to sign me. But I’d made my decision. New England Revolution it is.”
Buttner has not had the easiest of times within the game of football as he has failed to reach the potential many had expected him to achieve, with Sir Alex Ferguson appearing to laud the defender’s ability when was brought to Manchester United in 2012 (BBC).
The 30-year-old, who has also had a spell in Russia and Belgium with Dinamo Moscow and Anderlecht respectively, has only gone on to make a total of 290 appearances in a career that has spanned 12 years to date (TransferMarkt).
Indeed, his link to Rangers may not have been as surprising as first thought, as Gerrard may have been keen to find a new left-back following Jon Flanagan’s injury, although Borna Barisic appears to have stepped up and finally make the grade at Ibrox.
The Croatia international has been earning rave reviews for his performances in the side as of late, with the manager stating that he felt the left-back was going from strength to strength with every game in which he features (club’s official website).
Whilst it will be impossible to know whether Buttner could have been a success at Rangers if he were to team up with them at Ibrox, his decision to snub a move may not have not backfired on the Gers as much as initially feared.
Barisic appears to have made the position his own in recent weeks and whilst his attacking play is also contributing to the side, bringing the 30-year-old to Glasgow may have just been a wasted move for everybody involved.
