Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos continues to be a man in demand, with two more clubs declaring their interest in the Colombian in recent days.
After the Daily Star had claimed earlier this month that Newcastle had expressed a desire to bring the 23-year-old to Tyneside, Football Insider reported on Monday that Inter Milan have turned their attention to the ‘Gers forward after losing patience in their pursuit of Olivier Giroud.
It isn’t difficult to see why Tottenham and Inter, both of whom have played in the Champions League this season, would want to sign Morelos. The Colombian has been in scintillating form for Rangers, with a massive haul of 28 goals in 35 appearances so far this term and 76 goals in 126 games in total for the Ibrox club.
Notably, half of the 23-year-old’s goals in the current campaign have been scored in the Europa League, with his six goals in the group stage more than any other player in the competition. He scored in both matches against Porto, who were Champions League quarter-finalists last year, so Morelos has proven that he can perform against high-calibre opposition.
Football Insider reported last month that Rangers had held discussions with the striker’s representatives and emphatically signalled that they would not sell him in January for any price. That is not surprising given that his 28-goal tally is almost twice that of their next most prolific player Jermain Defoe (15) and more than four times higher than Joe Aribo, their third highest scorer (six).
Clearly Rangers would not like to sell Morelos given how prolific he has been for them, but while Spurs could offer him Champions League football, the Colombian has a realistic chance of playing in the tournament next season, with the ‘Gers just two points behind Premiership leaders Celtic and with a game in hand.
Also, Morelos may take into account the strong public backing that he received from manager Steven Gerrard in the wake of criticism from Chris Sutton over a cut-throat gesture he made in last month’s derby win over Celtic. If the 23-year-old is tempted by the interest from Tottenham and Inter, Rangers could point out to him that he is in with a strong chance of winning silverware at Ibrox and has European football coming his way again in the spring, with the Light Blues advancing to the last 32 of the Europa League.
Rangers should have plenty of cards to play in convincing Morelos to refute other clubs’ interest in him and stay put at Ibrox, so a January move wouldn’t seem too likely.
