Rangers: Eduardo Herrera returns from loan spell with Necaxa - Rangers

Rangers’ attacking options have been supplemented by the addition of Mexican striker Eduardo Herrera to their squad.

The Scottish Sun reported that the 31-year-old’s loan spell at Necaxa in his homeland has now expired and he will return to Ibrox.

According to The Scottish Sun, Herrera could soon be set for another short-term exit and his contract at Rangers is set to expire at the end of this season.

Herrera has been on Rangers’ books since June 2017 but failed to make much of an impact at Ibrox upon his arrival, with just two goals in 24 appearances and a paltry two starts for the club.

He has twice been out on loan to his native Mexico, going to Santos Laguna in 2018 before spending this year at Necaxa. [via TransferMarkt]

A return of nine goals in 39 games for Necaxa was far from appalling, although the 31-year-old struggled for first team recognition in recent months, making just one start in the autumn Apertura championship in which his team reached the play-offs before losing to Monterrey.

Having started so rarely for the Mexican club during his loan spell, Herrera likely faces an arduous task trying to break into the first team at Rangers, where strikers Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe have hit 40 goals between them already this season.

Steven Gerrard also has Greg Stewart at centre-forward if needed, although with no other alternatives to call upon, Herrera at least supplements their attacking options if some of their other strikers are unavailable through suspension or injury.

Defoe is due to return to Bournemouth, from whom he is currently on loan, at the end of the season, which may leave Rangers even lighter in attack. However, as reported by STV, the 37-year-old is expected to sign a one-year permanent contract at Ibrox.

The sparsity of centre-forwards at Rangers should tilt Gerrard towards keeping Herrera in reserve in case of a suspension or injury crisis further down the line.

However, his inability to obtain regular game-time at Necaxa, along with his poor record for the ‘Gers thus far, wouldn’t suggest that the Mexican is a dependable long-term option in attack. He’s worth retaining for now but the ‘Gers will likely still need to add a more prolific centre-forward as a reliable alternative to Morelos and Defoe.
