Rangers fans were celebrating Mikel Arteta’s birthday as the former player turned 38-years-old.
The Spaniard spent two seasons at Ibrox, where he enjoyed a fruitful spell. After joining from Barcelona for just £7.11m, Arteta went on to score 14 goals in just 68 appearances across all competitions. He even clinched the treble for former manager Walter Smith’s team, striking home the title-winning penalty in stoppage time against Dunfermline Athletic as the Gers ran out 6-1 winners (via BBC).
However, his time with the Glasgow outfit didn’t last too long with Arteta leaving the club to return to his native Spain to join Real Sociedad. He did give supporters of the Scottish giants a mention in his statement following his retirement from football back in 2016, thanking them for being respectful and loyal. Supporters were full of celebratory messages for the retired midfielder as they swamped Twitter to react to the club’s post. Here are some tweets:
