Rangers attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi may well have become an instant cult hero with a number of the club’s fans, judging by the responses on Twitter to his match-winning moment on Wednesday night.
The 21-year-old only came to the club on transfer deadline day last Friday on loan from Genk but, after making his debut off the bench against Aberdeen a day later, he then marked his first start for the club against Hibernian by scoring an 84th-minute winner to maintain the seven-point gap to Premiership leaders Celtic.
Steven Gerrard’s men had to win the hard way after falling behind in the first half and looked set to again drop points at home before the Romanian struck late on, finishing from a tight angle as he latched on to Connor Goldson’s flick from a Scott Arfield header. [via Sky Sports]
Hagi had already gone close to scoring early in the second half and his overall performance drew praise from some reporters. In the Glasgow Times, Matthew Lindsay said that he “looked comfortable on the ball and passed well”, while James Black of Rangers News wrote that he had the look of “a really intelligent player”.
These ‘Gers fans on Twitter were also gushing over the recent loan arrival after his decisive moment against Hibernian, with one making the tongue-in-cheek suggestion that he is set to win this year’s Ballon d’Or:
I’m not trying to overreact or anything. But I’m pretty sure Ianis Hagi will be the next Ballon d'Or Winner. 😂🙌🏻 pic.twitter.com/TukwecTUcx

2 minutes into this second half, and I'd like to formally apply for membership of the Ianis Hagi fanclub.
