Rangers fans react to Glenn Middleton’s international exploits

Rangers supporters have been pretty despondent this week after seeing their team lose the Old Firm derby on Sunday to suffer their first defeat under new manager Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool legend had overseen a very encouraging start to his managerial career in guiding the Gers to the group stages of the Europa League as well as an unbeaten start in domestic competition, but Sunday brought about a familiar feeling for Gers fans given it is now six years since they last beat their bitter rivals in the league. Olivier Ntcham’s strike was enough to earn Brendan Rodgers’ side a deserved 1-0 win at Parkhead, thus moving them up to second in the Scottish Premiership table, four points clear of Gerrard’s Rangers.

As such, there have been many downbeat Gers supporters up and down the country in recent times, although several are likely to be intrigued by the exploits of midfielder Glenn Middleton on international duty this week.

The 18-year-old made the move from Norwich City to Ibrox back in January of this year and has since managed six first team appearances for the Scottish giants, all of which coming under Gerrard’s guidance this time round.

And the winger’s encouraging efforts for the Light Blues earned him a call-up to the Scotland Under-19 side for their recent friendly match against Poland, in which Middleton played a key part in laying on three assists in a 3-1 success for William Stirk’s side.

And his efforts for the Scotland Under-19s stimulated quite a reaction from Rangers fans on Twitter, with some taking aim at Gerrard for not giving him more game time, while others, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, expected more from the 18-year-old…
