A number of Rangers fans were disappointed not to see teenage right-back Nathan Patterson keep his place in the starting XI on Wednesday night.
With regular right-back James Tavernier missing the match against St Mirren through injury, Jon Flanagan was instead selected to start in that position as Steven Gerrard made six changes to his line-up, which was revealed by @RangersFC before the game at Ibrox.
Eighteen-year-old Patterson, who made the bench on Wednesday, was given his competitive senior debut for the club in last week’s Scottish Cup win over Stranraer and his performance that night earned him plaudits from quite a few ‘Gers fans on social media. Gerrard also hailed the youngster after that game, saying: “Really pleased with Nathan Patterson. I thought he was very positive, he done everything we’ve asked of him and everything we’ve been working on.” [via @RangersFC]
The teenager also featured for Rangers during their recent friendly win over Lokomotiv Tashkent in Dubai and has made his mark for the development side in the UEFA Youth League, scoring once and setting up another goal in the competition so far this season, while ex-Light Blues defender Alan Hutton told Football Insider that he sees Patterson challenging Tavernier for his place in the side next season.
After seeing the starting line-up for the St Mirren game, these Rangers fans on Twitter lamented the absence of the 18-year-old from the team:
