Many Rangers fans have been calling for teenage right-back Nathan Patterson to be given his chance in the first team in the absence of the stricken James Tavernier.
The Daily Record reported that the 28-year-old ‘Gers captain is likely to be out for the next three weeks after contracting a virus, which would bring an end to his ever-present status in the Premiership this season.
While 19-year-old Patterson has yet to play competitively for Rangers’ first team, he started in the 6-1 friendly win over Lokomotiv Tashkent last Saturday and set up a decent opportunity in that game. Furthermore, he has been a regular for the development side in the UEFA Youth League, starting all four matches so far for the Light Blues in that tournament and with a goal and an assist to his name (as per TransferMarkt). This week he received a glowing endorsement from former ‘Gers right-back Alan Hutton, who told Football Insider that he thinks the teenager could challenge Tavernier for a first team place over the next year.
Following the news of the captain’s impending absence, these Rangers fans on Twitter want to see Patterson getting his chance immediately, starting with the Scottish Cup tie against Stranraer on Friday night, with one fan believing that he is a “ready made replacement” for Tavernier:
I think he’d play young patterson. He was excellent at the weekend. We have a run of games to play a youngster. Stranraer, St Mirren at home, then hearts away, then Ross county at home. 4 matches a youngster could come in and get great experience / game time.

Big blow if Tav is out for a number of weeks. Really hope we opt for Nathan Patterson over Flanagan or Polster, who for me aren't good enough

Play Nathan Patterson as RB if Tav’s out

If this Tav news is true, then what an opportunity for Nathan Patterson to put a run together and show his potential.
