According to Football Insider, Rangers are eyeing up a move for Leeds United’s Kemar Roofe this summer as a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos.
The Leeds forward was the leading goalscorer for the Championship outfit last season as Marcelo Bielsa’s side finished 3rd and faltered in the play-offs. His 15 goals were crucial to his side, though, and despite the fact Leeds are offering him a bumper contract, also as per Football Insider, he could still leave Elland Road.
A fee has not been touted yet between the clubs seeing as the talks are only in preliminary stages, but with Leeds already selling both Jack Clarke (BBC) and Pontus Jansson (BBC) this summer, losing their top scorer could be another blow.
Roofe signed for Leeds way back in summer 2016 from Oxford United (BBC) and he’s slowly become a more prolific player for the club judging from his stats from last season compared to the 2016/17 campaign where he scored just three league goals.
Gerrard improved Morelos’ goalscoring record from 18 in the season prior to his arrival, to 30 after a year working with him, so has shown an ability to coach forwards to score more goals, something Roofe has indicated he can take to well judging by his own improvement.
Convincing Leeds to sell the player at the moment looks like the hardest part of this transfer, however, the attacker has just one year left on his current deal at Elland Road, though the Whites are preparing to offer the player a new deal, as stated above.
Rangers aren’t the only side looking to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding the future of Roofe, as FI claimed back in early June that Aston Villa were looking into the possibility of signing the Leeds man to plug the gap left by Tammy Abraham, although they’ve since signed Wesley Moraes from Gent (BBC).
