Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara has insisted that he is intent on remaining at Ibrox amid reports of interest from the English Premier League.
The Scottish Sun reported earlier this month that the 24-year-old has attracted the attention of several prospective suitors from south of the border, including Arsenal, Sheffield United, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, but says that he is committed to Steven Gerrard’s side.
He told The Scottish Sun: “I’m a Rangers player, so until told otherwise, that is my focus. Coming up to Scotland was definitely one of my best decisions. It was to get game-time under my belt in men’s football and it has worked out well.
“The manager hasn’t spoken to me about the speculation at all. It’s been great working with him because he was a great midfielder. He has been really helpful. Obviously, we’re trying to win the title. We are looking forward to that and it is definitely an exciting time to be a Rangers player.”
Kamara joined Rangers from Dundee this time last year for just £50,000 (as per BBC) but quickly became an integral part of Gerrard’s team, starting 12 league games for the ‘Gers last season and another dozen so far this term, as well as all six Europa League group matches. Indeed, the Finland midfielder played for all but eight minutes of their European group campaign, indicating how much importance the manager places in him.
During the Light Blues’ Europa League run, he has illustrated just how crucial he has become to the team. He had the second highest passing success rate in the squad with 89.5% and only two players averages more passes per game than his 47.3. In terms of breaking up play, his match average of 1.2 interceptions was the third highest in the squad behind Ryan Jack and Borna Barisic. [via WhoScored]
Last week, former Rangers defender Alan Hutton called for the club to hand Kamara a new contract, telling Football Insider that “he’s been absolutely brilliant” in his time at Ibrox, and The Scottish Sun claimed that Gerrard is indeed considering a new deal for the 24-year-old.
Considering how little Kamara cost Rangers last January, for him to become not just a regular starter at the club but one of their best passers of the ball and winners of possession testifies to how exceptional a deal the ‘Gers struck for him.
It should not seem surprising that several English Premier League clubs want him but, with Kamara thriving at Rangers ahead of Finland’s maiden tournament appearance at Euro 2020, the midfielder is right to voice his intentions to stay put at Ibrox, where he has performed so admirably and put himself in the frame to represent his country at next summer’s European showpiece.
