Rangers winger Glenn Middleton has suffered a setback in his plans to go out on loan this month after picking up an injury.
The Daily Record reported that the 20-year-old had suffered a foot injury in a reserve team fixture against Motherwell this week, with the club now awaiting the results of a scan to discover the severity of the problem.
The print edition of the Daily Record had recently claimed [via BBC] that Ross County, St Mirren and NAC Breda had all interested in taking the youngster on loan in January, with the Daily Record since declaring that St Mirren have pulled out of the race for him.
Middleton has already been out on loan once this season, having had a spell at Hibernian, but things did not go to plan for him at Easter Road. He made just eight appearances in his time in Edinburgh, with the last of those coming in October, and fell out of favour after Jack Ross took charge the following month. Consequently, the 20-year-old’s loan was cut short just after Christmas and he returned to Rangers.
The winger appeared to be on the right track towards making it at Ibrox last season after scoring five goals and setting up another five in 28 appearances, although most of those were as a substitute and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard was happy enough for him to go out on loan given the summer transfer window signing of fellow left winger Ryan Kent.
The Scottish Sun recently claimed that Gerrard has been keen for the young winger to obtain more Premiership game-time after showing such promise last season but with Kent in strong form over the last couple of months, with five goals and three assists since the start of November, it seemed unlikely even before this week’s injury that Middleton would have featured much for the ‘Gers.
If Middleton is sidelined for a lengthy period following the outcome of the scan on his injury, that could well scupper any chances of him going out on loan this month and hence harm his prospects of getting first team football for the remainder of the season.
With Rangers firmly in the Premiership title hunt, Gerrard may not be in a position to throw youngsters like Middleton into the heat of battle with so much at stake, especially if they have had as little game-time as the 20-year-old winger, for whom 2019/20 looks increasingly likely to be a frustrating season of regression after such a promising campaign in 2018/19.
Rangers fans, how disappointing would it be if Middleton is denied a loan move because of his injury setback? Share your views in the comments section below!
