Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is hoping to again venture down a well-trodden path in the January transfer window.
The 39-year-old has brought several players to Ibrox either on loan or permanently from his former club Liverpool since becoming ‘Gers boss in May 2018, including Ryan Kent, Sheyi Ojo, Ovie Ejaria and Jon Flanagan.
According to Football Insider, Gerrard plans another raid on Anfield next month, with midfielder Herbie Kane on Rangers’ radar for the winter transfer window.
Football Insider previously reported that Liverpool were willing to listen to offers for Kane next month, while the same publication claimed that Rangers had approached the Reds last summer about possibly taking him on loan.
The 21-year-old has only played two senior competitive games for the Champions League winners and was given his first full start in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Aston Villa. [via TransferMarkt]
Although he managed to get three shots on target and won two tackles at Villa Park, he missed two big chances and was beaten by two dribbles (as per Sofascore), while many Liverpool fans on Twitter condemned his performance in the 0-5 defeat.
Kane showed that he can be an effective midfielder during his loan spell at Doncaster last season, scoring seven goals and setting up another 10 in 49 appearances for the English League One side (as per TransferMarkt).
However, Rangers are already well-stocked for goal-scoring midfield options – Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack have five goals each this season, while Scott Arfield has found the net three times. In addition, Aribo has four assists, with Jack and Arfield setting up three goals each. [via TransferMarkt]
Greg Docherty, another central midfielder in Gerrard’s squad, has also provided three assists this season and managed to do so in just 171 minutes of game-time. [via TransferMarkt]
Such is the plethora of midfield options at Ibrox that Docherty is one of four in that sector of the pitch to have played fewer than 500 minutes this term, along with Andy Halliday, Andy King and the as yet unused Jamie Barjonas. [via TransferMarkt]
Rangers already have plenty of central midfielders at their disposal, with Football Insider claiming that they are likely to offload the likes of King and Docherty before bringing in reinforcements.
Kane had a decent goal return at Doncaster last season but, having got his opportunity against Premier League opposition in Aston Villa in midweek, his missed chances and unfavourable social media reviews suggest that he still has a lot of improvement to make.
Also, with the ‘Gers having a few midfielders who have shown they can score and set up goals regularly, there doesn’t seem to be any pressing need to get Kane into their squad in January.
Rangers fans, do you think Kane would be a good addition to the midfield or is he one that Gerrard should avoid? Join in the discussion by commenting below!
