Rangers have received a boost after it emerged that Ianis Hagi wants to remain at the club beyond this season.
According to Chris Jack, the Romania international has reaffirmed his long-term future to the Glasgow outfit despite interest from Serie A side Lazio. Italian publication La Lazio Siamo No are claiming that the team hold an interest in the attacker after he was proposed to them.
The Glasgow Times’ report is fantastic news for Steven Gerrard and his men especially after the impact the Turkish-born ace has had on their season. Despite the fact Rangers have won just two of their last six across all competitions, the attacker can hold his head high due to his form in recent weeks.
Since he joined on a loan deal from Genk in the January transfer window, Hagi has scored three goals and assisted a further two in just 11 games across all competitions (via Transfermarkt). And given the youngster is just 21-years-old, the club also have the opportunity to build their team around a brilliant talent for years to come.
Did you expect more from Steven Gerrard when he was appointed?
His performance in the 3-2 victory against Braga really does highlight how much quality he possesses at such a young age. With Gers 2-0 down and seemingly heading for a crushing defeat at home in the Europa League, he grabbed the game by the scruff of its neck and turned the result in his side’s favour by scoring a brace.
His two goals came from his total of two shots, showing great clinical finishing in the final third. The £4.5m-rated, as per Transfermarkt, attacking midfielder also played the most key passes, had the third-most touches of the ball and the joint-third highest pass accuracy during a brilliant attacking display, as per WhoScored.
Ex-Ibrox favourite Kris Boyd has claimed that the Romanian can be a ‘creative difference’ and analysing his performance in the win against Braga it seems as though he is right (via Sky Sports). And given Alfredo Morelos has struggled to score many goals this calendar year, the last thing the side will want is to lose a player who can create goalscoring opportunities for the Colombian, especially considering Borna Barisic could be on his way out.
The news surrounding the playmaker is just what the doctor ordered and if they want to close the gap to their bitter rivals Celtic then keeping a talented figure like Hagi is key. It’s hard to see Morelos returning to goalscoring form without him.
