Rangers have been told they will need to stump up a significant fee if they are to land one of their reported transfer targets.
The Scottish Sun recently reported claims from Egyptian TV pundit and former international player Haytham Farouk saying that ‘Gers boss Steven Gerrard dispatched a delegation to Egypt to speak to Zamalek striker Mostafa Mohamed.
According to a report by The Scottish Sun on Wednesday, the Egyptian club’s president Mortada Mansour has insisted that he will not be sold for less than £5m, with Zamalek already rejecting two offers for the 22-year-old.
The Scottish Sun writer Mark Walker described Mohamed as “one of the highest-rated young strikers in African football”, adding that the 22-year-old finished as the top scorer in the Under-23 African Cup of Nations last month in which he helped Egypt to triumph.
He has had a decent if unspectacular scoring record for Zamalek, with four goals in 13 matches for the club after joining them from Tala’ea El Gaish, for whom he netted 12 times in 29 appearances in 2018/19. [via TransferMarkt]
Farouk dubbed him “one of the exciting talents in African football right now” (as per The Scottish Sun) and the Egyptian striker’s goal record suggests why Rangers may be interested in him.
The Egyptian would also be competing with Jermain Defoe, who has found the net 13 times in 24 appearances so far this season and could see his loan move from Bournemouth made permanent, according to STV.
Mohamed appears to have plenty of promise, judging by his goal return at club level and his top scorer showing in Egypt’s underage triumph recently, while Gerrard would likely welcome adding another centre-forward, with just three in his current squad.
However, with the 22-year-old striker likely to be backup to Morelos at first if he joins, £5m seems a steep price to fork out, especially with Ryan Kent being the only Rangers signing in the last 15 years to cost more than that amount (as per TransferMarkt).
In that context, it would appear that the ‘Gers would be best served by looking elsewhere to add to their striking options.
