Rangers: Jackie McNamara thinks Wes Foderingham could seek exit due to struggle for game-time

Rangers: Jackie McNamara thinks Wes Foderingham could seek exit due to struggle for game-time - Rangers

Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham could be set to leave the club in the near future due to a lack of game-time at Ibrox.

That is according to Football Insider pundit Jackie McNamara, who reckons that the ‘Gers need to attend to their goalkeeping situation quickly with the 28-year-old out of contract next summer.

Does Tyrese Campbell have the potential to succeed at Ibrox?

No

McNamara feels that Foderingham will want to be playing matches regularly and may need to leave Rangers in order to do so.

He told Football Insider: “Foderingham is out of contract at the end of the season so they need to sort him out or get another ‘keeper in. But they’ve got McCrorie who is out on loan, so they have got enough players in that position.”

When asked if he thought the ‘keeper was likely to leave the club, McNamara replied: “It looks that way, he’ll want game time, he’ll want to play. It just depends on what he wants in his career but it’s difficult as he was No.1 before.”

McNamara’s belief that Foderingham may seek pastures new in the coming months is substantiated by the 28-year-old’s inactivity over the last year and a half.

He played just eight times in total last season and has had a mere four appearances so far this term, with Allan McGregor firmly established as Rangers’ number one having made 82 appearances since rejoining the club in summer 2018.

Prior to that, Foderingham had been first choice between the sticks for three straight seasons, making 130 appearances between his arrival in Ibrox in 2015 and McGregor’s return three years later.

The ex-Swindon man would likely be playing backup to McGregor at Rangers for the foreseeable future if he stays, with the latter signing a contract extension up to 2021 last week.

Foderingham will be 30 by then and looks set to have spent two years of his career feeding off scraps, assuming he sees out his contract at Ibrox to the end of the season.

Unless Rangers offer him a new deal in the meantime, the decision to leave could be made for him by the club. However, as McNamara has suggested, the goalkeeper may take matters into his own hands before then if he feels that he has already spent long enough living in McGregor’s shadow at Ibrox and seeks a new challenge following his fifth season at Rangers.
