Rangers: Jamie Murphy likely to leave Ibrox in January - Rangers

Rangers could part ways with Jamie Murphy in January, with Football Insider reporting that the Ibrox club are willing to listen to offers for the 30-year-old.

According to Football Insider, a mid-season exit for the winger seems likely, be it on loan or on a permanent basis, given his struggles for game-time this season following his return from a cruciate ligament injury suffered in August 2018.

Murphy enjoyed an effective first half-season at Rangers following his initial loan arrival from Brighton in January 2018, scoring five goals and setting up 10 in just 19 games (as per TransferMarkt).

However, after signing permanently in May 2018, he ruptured knee ligaments in the early weeks of 2018/19 during a game at Kilmarnock, whose Rugby Park stadium has an artificial pitch (as per BBC).

Having missed the vast majority of last season, the 30-year-old has struggled to win back his place in the team, making just two substitute appearances totalling 53 minutes so far this term.

Murphy has been unfortunate not just with his long-term injury but also with the strong competition for his preferred left winger role at Ibrox, with Ryan Kent, Jordan Jones, Sheyi Ojo and Greg Stewart all capable of playing in that position.

Kent has been used regularly on the left-hand side of attack since joining Rangers permanently in the summer, making 15 appearances already this season. The ex-Liverpool man has been in fine form of late, with two goals and three assists since the November international break (as per TransferMarkt).

Jones and Ojo also played on the left in the early weeks of the season, with the latter scoring from that position in the win over Feyenoord in September, while Stewart has also found the net when playing as a left winger this term.

With Murphy now 30 and out of action for so long following his crucial ligament injury, the Rangers hierarchy may feel that he is unlikely to rediscover the form he showed in his first few months at Ibrox.

Also, with several players competing for the left winger berth in Steven Gerrard’s line-up and Kent currently proving quite effective from that position, the ex-Brighton man seems to have little chance of getting minutes at Ibrox and could benefit from a change of scenery once the transfer window re-opens next month.

Rangers fans, do you think a move away would be best for Murphy? Can you see him having much of a part to play at the club anymore? Share your views in the comments section below!
