Rangers need a calming influence in the centre of the park next season, and Josip Vukovic could give Steven Gerrard the stability to go for the title next year.
The 27-year-old has played 24 times for Portuguese side Maritimo this season, but he’s been attracting attention from across Europe, including Chelsea and Lazio and now Corriere Dello Sport, via the Daily Record, claim the Gers have joined the race for the defensive midfielder.
He’s rated at just £360,000 on Transfermarkt, so he could be a bargain if Gerrard can tempt him to Ibrox. He’s got two years left on his contract, so he’ll cost more than that, but it’d be less than the club would expect to pay for quality midfield enforcer.
Ross McCrorie has had to settle for substitute appearances recently, so if Vukovic does come in then we expect him to have even less chance of becoming a regular starter in Gerrard’s side. It’s a shame, but it could be necessary to win the title.
The Gers need to have more of a level head in big games this season, and they need a midfielder who’s willing to control proceedings and keep the back four protected.
To put it simply, Vukovic is the man and McCrorie isn’t.
With the attention Vukovic is getting from top clubs in Europe, it’d be a game-changing catch for Rangers. Indeed, he’d give them that extra quality in the centre of the pitch to push for the title. What they have already simply isn’t good enough.
