Former England international Kevin Phillips has told Rangers not to cave in to Premier League interest in top scorer Alfredo Morelos, saying that they would be “crazy” to let him leave Ibrox in January.
Football Insider reported on Tuesday that Tottenham are working on a possible deal for the 23-year-old in the current transfer window with Harry Kane ruled out through injury until April. However, with the Colombian scoring far more goals than anyone else at Rangers this season, and with Steven Gerrard’s team firmly in the Premiership title race, Phillips believes that selling him could prove fatal to their hopes of silverware.
He told Football Insider: “That certainly would turn anyone’s head, but from Gerrard’s point of view and from Rangers, they’d be crazy, I don’t see it happening in this window. It could possibly happen in the summer but Rangers have got a chance of winning that SPL (Premiership), they haven’t won it for years and years so why would you let your top goalscorer go?
“He’s your main threat, it would be crazy, it would be suicidal business, wouldn’t it, from Rangers’ point of view? The lad’s made a reputation for himself, he can score goals so rightly there’s going to be some big clubs.”
Phillips is absolutely right to advise Rangers to stand firm amid Tottenham’s reported interest in Morelos, given just how valuable he has been to the Ibrox club already this season. He has already surpassed the 25-goal mark for the campaign, having hit 30 in the whole of 2018/19, and is streets ahead of their next most prolific scorer Jermain Defoe.
Their progression to the last 32 of the Europa League, their first time getting to the knockout rounds in Europe since 2011, owed a lot to the Colombian, who scored in all but one of their group games and whose six goals have made him the leading scorer in the entire tournament so far.
Also, as Phillips has said, Rangers are very much in the hunt for a first Premiership title in nine years, with Morelos already into double figures in the league for the third season in a row. The late December win over Celtic struck a direct blow to their Glasgow rivals as the two teams closely vie for domestic supremacy.
With Tottenham joined in the race for the 23-year-old by Inter Milan (as per Football Insider), Rangers could find it harder to retain the services of the Colombian if interest in him grows further. However, as Phillips has warned, they must dig their heels in and flatly refuse any offers that may be submitted for him in January, considering how much is at stake this season and how vital Morelos has been to their fine campaign so far.
